A Whaling Love Song Farewell to Tarwaithe is a song about a young man who ships out to sea to hunt the whales and is writing to his loved one about his loneliness and longing to return home. An extremely sensitive and passionate song that runs contrary to the vision most have of whalers as that of being strong, hairy-chest men who were hard workers, hard drinkers and hard fighters. While this may be true of some, whalers came in all walks of life, and their music also showed a strong liking for gentle, meditative songs. The Whaling Industry The hunt for whales in Great Britain began around the early 1750s from most Scottish ports, particularly on the east coast. For the most part, the blubber of the whales was made into oil and used to light many city streets into and throughout the nineteenth century. In this period, whale hunting nearly made whales extinct, and fortunately, for the sake of the whales, new technologies came along that ended this trade. East coast ports in Scotland and in England were the home of almost all Arctic whalers. Ports from Dundee, along with Peterhead and Aberdeen took the lead, but many smaller ports also had vessels, including Montrose. Whaling vessels were usually around 120 feet long to be about twice as long as a big whale. Prior to 1857 only sailing ships were used and manned by a crew of around fifty. This number was far more than was actually required to sail the vessel, but extra hands were needed to man the boats in hunting the whales ...

This was suppose to be cute, but ended yp scaring me....A kitten about 3 weeks old, tries to get pampered by the dog, the dog go to move away from the kitten and his leg swings out, hits the kitten, the kitten go sailing about a foot, and I waited for the kitten to get back up and it just laid there.............needless to say I turn off the recorder and tended to the kitten, took about a minute to come to, but he's doing fine!
